Erzurum is a city in eastern Turkey. Known as the largest city in and the eponymous capital of Erzurum Province, it is situated 1757 meters (5766 feet) above sea level. Erzurum, the highest major city in Turkey, sprawls over a high plateau-like basin surrounded by high mountains. On the east of the city, the Palandöken Mountain range reaches an altitude of 3271 meters (10,732 feet) and remains snow-covered year-round.

History

Erzurum has a rich history dating back thousands of years. It was part of the Roman Empire before falling under Byzantine control. The city was later conquered by the Seljuks, followed by the Ottomans. Each of these civilizations left their mark on the city, contributing to its diverse cultural and architectural heritage.

Culture

Erzurum's culture is a blend of the diverse civilizations that have ruled the city. The local cuisine is rich and hearty, with a particular emphasis on meat and pastries. Cag Kebab, a horizontally stacked marinated rotating lamb kebab variety, is a specialty of Erzurum.

Erzurum is home to several significant landmarks. The Erzurum Castle, located in the city center, offers panoramic views of the city. The Çifte Minareli Medrese is an architectural marvel, a historical Islamic school dating back to the Seljuk era. The Yakutiye Medrese is another important historical building, now serving as a museum.

Erzurum is known for winter sports. The Palandöken Ski Center on Palandöken Mountain is one of the world's foremost skiing destinations. The city hosted the 2011 Winter Universiade, an international multi-sport event, and continues to be a hub for winter sports in Turkey.
