Digital Art is a form of art that uses digital technology as an essential part of the creative or presentation process. Since the 1960s, various names have been used to describe this phenomenon, including computer art and multimedia art, and digital art itself is placed under the larger umbrella term new media art.

History[edit]

The development of digital art was influenced by many of the same ideas that inspired the Internet, such as experimentation with networks and the creation of new, virtual spaces. The impact of digital technology has transformed traditional activities such as painting, drawing, sculpture and music/sound art, while new forms, such as net art, digital installation art, and virtual reality, have become recognized as contemporary art.

Types of Digital Art[edit]

Digital art can be purely computer-generated, such as fractals and algorithmic art, or taken from other sources, such as a scanned photograph or image drawn using vector graphics software using a mouse or graphics tablet. Artworks are considered digital painting when created in similar fashion to non-digital paintings but using software on a computer platform and digitally outputting the resulting image as painted on canvas.

Computer Generated 3D Artwork[edit]

Computer generated 3D artwork is used in a wide range of applications such as video games, movies, and television shows. This form of digital art is created using software that manipulates and creates images in three dimensions.

Digital Photography and Photo Manipulation[edit]

Digital photography and photo manipulation has had a significant impact on the art world. The ability to digitally edit or enhance photos has opened up new possibilities for artists.

Vector Art[edit]

Vector art is a type of digital graphic which uses mathematical points to create an image. It can be used in countless commercial and personal projects, including print to web and large scale exhibition to smartphone.

Impact[edit]

Digital art has had a significant impact on the art world. It has opened up new possibilities for creativity, from its ability to combine different media and art forms to the interactive pieces that technology can create.
