Holocene is the current geological epoch. It began approximately 11,650 cal years before present, after the last major ice age, the Pleistocene epoch. The Holocene is part of the Quaternary period, and it has witnessed all of humanity's recorded history and the rise and fall of all its civilizations.
Overview[edit]
The Holocene has been identified with the current warm period, known as MIS 1. It is considered by some to be an interglacial period within the Pleistocene Epoch.
Climate[edit]
The Holocene has seen the growth and impacts of the human species worldwide, including all its written history, development of major civilizations, and overall significant transition toward urban living in the present.
Human Impact[edit]
Human activity has significantly altered the environment. A number of scientists have proposed that the Holocene be ended by Anthropocene epoch due to the significant global impact of human activity.
