Danone is a multinational food-products corporation based in Paris, France. It has four business lines: Fresh Dairy products, Waters, Early Life Nutrition and Medical Nutrition. In the United States, the Fresh Dairy products division merged with the WhiteWave Foods company in 2017 and is now known as Danone North America.
History[edit]
Danone was founded by Isaac Carasso, a Sephardic Jewish migrant from Thessaloniki, in Barcelona, Spain, in 1919. The brand was named Danone, which translates to "little Daniel", after his son Daniel Carasso.
Products[edit]
Danone's portfolio includes both international brands and local brands. The international brands include: Activia, Actimel, Alpro, Aptamil, Danette, Danonino, Danio, Evian, Nutricia, Oikos, and Volvic. The local brands include: Aqua in Indonesia, Blédina in France, Bonafont in Mexico and Brazil, Cow & Gate in the UK, Happy Family Brands in the USA, Horizon Organic in the USA, Prostokvashino in Russia, and Vega in Canada.
Sustainability[edit]
Danone is committed to sustainable development. The company set a goal to become a zero net carbon company by 2050. In 2020, Danone became the first listed company to adopt the “Entreprise à Mission” model created by French law in 2019.
Criticism and Controversy[edit]
Over the years, Danone has faced criticism and controversy over its marketing of infant formula in developing countries, its response to the 2008 Chinese milk scandal, and its general business practices.
