Imperia is a city and comune in Liguria, Italy. Historically, it was the capital of the province of Imperia until 2009, when it was replaced by Sanremo. The city is popularly known for its picturesque landscapes, historical sites, and its significant role in the olive oil industry.
History[edit]
Imperia was established in 1923 with the amalgamation of the towns of Oneglia and Porto Maurizio, along with some surrounding villages. The city's history is rich and varied, with influences from the Roman Empire, the Genoese Republic, and the House of Savoy.
Geography[edit]
Imperia is located on the Riviera di Ponente, between Genoa and the French border. The city is divided into two distinct parts: Oneglia, which is the commercial and industrial center, and Porto Maurizio, the historical and tourist center.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Imperia is largely based on tourism, agriculture, and the olive oil industry. The city is home to the Olio Carli olive oil company, one of the largest in Italy. It also hosts the annual OlivExpo, a trade fair dedicated to the olive oil industry.
Culture[edit]
Imperia is known for its rich culture, with numerous festivals and events held throughout the year. The most notable of these is the annual San Giovanni Battista festival, which includes a traditional boat race and fireworks display.
