Animal roleplay is a form of role-playing game where participants adopt the roles of non-human animals. This can include both physical and non-physical elements, and can be either a recreational activity or a part of a spiritual ritual.

Types of Animal Roleplay[edit]

There are several different types of animal roleplay, including:

  • Pet play: This is where one person acts like a pet, such as a dog or cat, and another person acts as the owner. The pet may wear costumes or accessories to enhance the roleplay.
  • Therianthropy: This is a spiritual belief that a person has a connection with a non-human animal, often a specific species. The person may roleplay as this animal as a way to explore this connection.
  • Furry fandom: This is a subculture interested in anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. Roleplay within this fandom can involve creating and acting out scenarios with these characters.
  • Otherkin: This is a subculture who socially and spiritually identify as not entirely human. Some otherkin believe that they are, in part, non-human animals and may engage in animal roleplay as a way to express this.

Psychological Aspects[edit]

Animal roleplay can have various psychological aspects. It can be a form of escapism, allowing participants to explore different identities and experiences. It can also be a way to express parts of one's identity that may not be socially acceptable to express otherwise. For some, it can be a way to explore power dynamics, through roles such as pet and owner.

In Popular Culture[edit]

Animal roleplay has been depicted in various forms of media, including films, television shows, and books. It is often used as a form of humor, but can also be portrayed in a more serious or dramatic context.
