Velebit is the largest mountain range in Croatia, part of the Dinaric Alps. It stretches for about 145 kilometers along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, forming a natural barrier between the coastal region and the continental part of the country.

Geography[edit]

Velebit is located in the central part of Croatia, extending from the Vratnik Pass in the northwest to the Zrmanja River in the southeast. The range is characterized by its rugged terrain, with numerous peaks, the highest of which is Vaganski vrh at 1,757 meters. The mountain range is divided into several sections, including Northern Velebit, Central Velebit, and Southern Velebit.

Several parts of Velebit are protected as national parks and nature reserves. The most notable are Paklenica National Park and Northern Velebit National Park. These parks are popular destinations for hiking, climbing, and exploring the unique karst landscapes.
