TRPV6 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the TRPV6 gene. It is a member of the transient receptor potential (TRP) family of ion channels. TRPV6 is involved in calcium absorption and homeostasis.
Function[edit]
TRPV6 is a member of a family of TRP channels, which mediate sensory functions including pain, heat, taste, and vision. TRPV6 is thought to play a role in calcium absorption and reabsorption in the kidney. It is highly selective for calcium and is nearly impermeable to other cations.
Clinical significance[edit]
Mutations in the TRPV6 gene have been associated with hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis. In addition, overexpression of TRPV6 has been observed in several types of cancer, including prostate, breast, and thyroid cancers.
