Niagara Peninsula is a geographical region located in Southern Ontario, Canada, between the southern shore of Lake Ontario and the northern shore of Lake Erie. It is characterized by its unique microclimate, which makes it an ideal location for wine production, and is home to a large number of wineries.

Etymology[edit]

The term "Niagara Peninsula" is derived from the name of the Niagara River, which in turn is thought to originate from the Iroquoian word "Onguiaahra", meaning "The Strait".

Geography[edit]

The Niagara Peninsula is bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, Lake Erie to the south, and the Niagara River to the east. It is characterized by its fertile soil and unique microclimate, which is influenced by the Great Lakes and the Niagara Escarpment.

Niagara Peninsula Wineries[edit]

The Niagara Peninsula is one of the most recognized wine-producing regions in Canada. The unique climate of the region, influenced by the Great Lakes and the Niagara Escarpment, creates ideal conditions for growing a variety of grapes. The region is known for its production of high-quality wines, including Icewine, a type of dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine.

The Niagara Peninsula is home to over 100 wineries, each with its unique style and selection of wines. Some of the notable wineries in the region include Inniskillin, Peller Estates, and Jackson-Triggs.
