Hualong One

Hualong One (also known as HPR1000) is a third-generation pressurized water nuclear reactor technology, developed by the China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) and the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). The design is based on the earlier CPR-1000 platform, with enhancements to meet the latest international safety requirements.

History

The development of Hualong One began in 1990s as part of China's aim to create a standardized design for widespread deployment while reducing reliance on foreign technology. The design was finalized in 2014, and the first units began construction in 2015.

Design

Hualong One is a three-loop design with a 177 fuel assembly core. It has active and passive safety systems, including a double containment shell for improved safety. The design life of the reactor is 60 years, and it has a thermal efficiency of approximately 34.5%.

Deployment

As of 2021, Hualong One reactors are under construction or planned in several countries, including China, United Kingdom, Argentina, and Pakistan. The first Hualong One reactor to begin operation was Unit 5 of the Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant in China, which was connected to the grid in November 2020.

International Cooperation

China has been actively promoting Hualong One in international markets as part of its Belt and Road Initiative. In 2016, the United Kingdom approved the construction of a Hualong One reactor at the Bradwell nuclear power site.
