Fireman's carry is a technique used primarily in firefighting and wrestling to lift and carry a person over the shoulder. It is also used in various forms of martial arts and in military rescue operations. The technique is named for its frequent use by firefighters to carry injured or unconscious people away from danger.

History[edit]

The fireman's carry has been used by firefighters for centuries. It was originally developed as a method of carrying heavy equipment up ladders, but was soon adapted for use in rescuing people from burning buildings. The technique is still taught in firefighting academies today.

Technique[edit]

To perform a fireman's carry, the rescuer kneels down next to the person to be carried. The rescuer then places one arm under the person's knees and the other arm over the person's shoulder and around the back. The rescuer then stands, lifting the person onto their shoulder. The person's weight is distributed evenly across the rescuer's shoulders and back, allowing the rescuer to carry the person for a longer distance than would be possible with other carrying methods.

Uses[edit]

In addition to its use in firefighting, the fireman's carry is also used in wrestling and martial arts. In these sports, the technique is used to lift an opponent off the ground and throw them to the mat. The fireman's carry is also used in military rescue operations to carry injured soldiers off the battlefield.

Safety[edit]

While the fireman's carry is a useful technique, it is not without risks. If performed incorrectly, it can cause injury to both the rescuer and the person being carried. Therefore, it is important to receive proper training before attempting a fireman's carry.
