Statistics Indonesia (also known as BPS-Statistics Indonesia or Badan Pusat Statistik) is the government agency responsible for producing official statistics in Indonesia. The agency's main tasks include conducting statistical surveys, compiling statistical data, and providing data to the government and public.

History[edit]

Statistics Indonesia was established in 1960, replacing the previous Central Bureau of Statistics. The agency's establishment was part of a broader effort to improve the quality and reliability of statistical data in Indonesia.

Organization[edit]

Statistics Indonesia is headed by a Chief Statistician, who is appointed by the President of Indonesia. The agency is divided into several directorates, each responsible for a specific area of statistics. These include the Directorate of Economic Statistics, the Directorate of Population and Manpower Statistics, and the Directorate of Social Statistics.

Activities[edit]

Statistics Indonesia conducts a wide range of statistical surveys, including the Population Census, the Agricultural Census, and the Economic Census. The agency also compiles data on a variety of topics, such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), inflation, unemployment, and poverty.

In addition to its regular activities, Statistics Indonesia also provides technical assistance and training to other government agencies and organizations in the field of statistics.

Publications[edit]

Statistics Indonesia publishes a variety of reports and publications, including the Statistical Yearbook of Indonesia, the Indonesia in Figures series, and the Indonesia Economic Indicators series. These publications provide detailed data and analysis on various aspects of the Indonesian economy and society.

Criticism and Controversy[edit]

Despite its important role, Statistics Indonesia has faced criticism over the years. Some critics argue that the agency's data is not always reliable or accurate. Others have raised concerns about the agency's independence, suggesting that it may be influenced by political considerations.
