The company was a subsidiary of C&S Wholesale Grocers, the largest wholesale grocery supply company in the U.S. The chain operated stores under several banners, including Southern Family Markets, Piggly Wiggly, and Bruno's.

Southern Family Markets was established in 2005 after C&S Wholesale Grocers acquired the assets of BI-LO LLC and Bruno's Supermarkets. The company operated stores in several states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi.
