Prepuce is a term used in both human and animal anatomy. It can refer to the clitoral hood in females and the foreskin in males. The prepuce is a fold of skin that covers the external sexual organs.

Anatomy

In males, the prepuce is the fold of skin that covers the glans penis. It is also known as the foreskin. The prepuce is retractable and can be pulled back to reveal the glans. In females, the prepuce is the fold of skin that covers the clitoris, also known as the clitoral hood.

Function

The prepuce serves several functions in both males and females. It provides a protective covering for the sensitive glans and clitoris. It also helps to maintain the sensitivity of these organs by protecting them from external elements such as friction and drying out.

Medical and cultural aspects

The prepuce is often a subject of discussion in medical and cultural contexts. In some cultures, the removal of the male prepuce, or circumcision, is a common practice. This is often done for religious or cultural reasons, but can also be done for medical reasons. In females, the removal of the prepuce, or clitoridectomy, is considered a form of female genital mutilation and is illegal in many countries.
