The Venice Film Festival (Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica di Venezia) is the oldest international film festival in the world. Founded in 1932, it takes place annually in late August or early September on the island of the Lido, in the Venetian Lagoon. The festival is part of the Venice Biennale, one of the world's oldest exhibitions of contemporary art, which was established by the City of Venice in 1895.

History[edit]

The Venice Film Festival was founded by Giuseppe Volpi, Luciano De Feo, and Antonio Maraini as part of the 18th Venice Biennale. The first edition took place from 6 to 21 August 1932. The festival was held at the Hotel Excelsior on the Lido. The first film to be screened was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Rouben Mamoulian.

Awards[edit]

The most prestigious award given out at the Venice Film Festival is the Golden Lion (Leone d'Oro), which is awarded to the best film screened in competition at the festival. Other major awards include the Silver Lion (Leone d'Argento), awarded for best direction, and the Volpi Cup (Coppa Volpi), awarded to the best actor and actress.

  • Orizzonti - A section dedicated to new trends in world cinema.
  • Out of Competition - Films that are showcased but not in competition.
