AFC Championship Game[edit]
The AFC Championship Game is the annual championship game of the American Football Conference (AFC) and one of the two semi-final playoff games of the National Football League (NFL), the largest professional American football league in the United States. The game is played on the penultimate weekend of the NFL playoffs and determines the champion of the AFC, who will then advance to face the champion of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the Super Bowl.

The AFC Championship Game was established in 1970 following the merger of the American Football League (AFL) and the NFL. The game was created to determine the AFC's representative in the Super Bowl, which was also established as part of the merger agreement. The first AFC Championship Game was played in January 1971, following the 1970 NFL season.
Format[edit]
The AFC Championship Game is played between the two remaining teams in the AFC playoffs. The team with the higher seed, based on regular season performance, is awarded home-field advantage. The winner of the game receives the Lamar Hunt Trophy, named in honor of the founder of the AFL and longtime owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, Lamar Hunt.

Over the years, the AFC Championship Game has featured many memorable and historic matchups. Some of the most notable games include:
- The 1981 AFC Championship Game, known as the "Freezer Bowl," where the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the San Diego Chargers in one of the coldest games in NFL history.
- The 2006 AFC Championship Game, where the Indianapolis Colts overcame an 18-point deficit to defeat the New England Patriots, earning their first Super Bowl appearance since moving to Indianapolis.
