Jonas is a name that has been used in various cultures and contexts throughout history. It is a common male first name in many Western countries, and is also a surname. The name has biblical origins, as it is the Greek form of Jonah.

The name Jonas is derived from the Hebrew name Yonah, which means "dove". In the Old Testament, Jonah was a prophet who was swallowed by a whale after trying to escape God's command to prophesy to the city of Nineveh.
