THU

THU or Tetrahydrocannabinol is one of at least 113 cannabinoids identified in cannabis. THC is the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis. With chemical name (−)-trans-Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol, the term THC also refers to cannabinoid isomers.

Chemistry

THC's chemical formula is C21H30O2, with a molecular mass of 314.464 g/mol. It is a glassy solid when cold, and becomes viscous and sticky if warmed. A pharmaceutical formulation of (−)-trans-Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol, known by its INN dronabinol, is available by prescription in the U.S. and Canada under the brand name Marinol.

Pharmacology

THC, similar to other cannabinoids that contain a phenol group, possesses mild antioxidant activity sufficient to protect neurons against oxidative stress, such as that produced by glutamate-induced excitotoxicity.

Medical uses

THC is used in the treatment of nausea and vomiting; for which it has best evidence, and also for pain, inflammation, and spasticity.

Side effects

The most common effects of THC include relaxation, altered perception of time and space, increased appetite, and mood changes.
