Cholesterol embolism (also known as cholesterol crystal embolism or atheroembolism) is a medical condition that occurs when cholesterol crystals dislodge from atherosclerotic plaques within the arteries and travel through the bloodstream to embolize (block) distant blood vessels. This can lead to tissue damage and organ dysfunction due to the impaired blood flow.
