Kosovo is a landlocked country in the Balkan Peninsula of Europe. It is bordered by Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia. The country's capital and largest city is Pristina. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008, a move not recognized by all countries.
History[edit]
The history of Kosovo is intertwined with the histories of its neighboring regions. The name "Kosovo" is derived from the Serbian term "kos", meaning "blackbird", and refers to the historical Battle of Kosovo Field in 1389. The region was part of the Ottoman Empire from the 15th to the early 20th century. In the late 20th century, Kosovo was the focus of the Kosovo War and the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.
Geography[edit]
Kosovo is located in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe. The country is landlocked and has a diverse geography with mountains and forests, plains and valleys. The highest point is Gjeravica, at 2,656 meters.
Politics[edit]
Kosovo is a parliamentary republic. The President of Kosovo is the head of state, and the Prime Minister of Kosovo is the head of government. The country's political structure also includes a multi-party system and a unicameral parliament.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Kosovo is a transition economy. It has experienced a significant growth in recent years, mainly driven by the services and industrial sectors. Kosovo has a large amount of natural resources, including nickel, lead, zinc, and lignite.
Culture[edit]
Kosovo's culture is rich and diverse, with influences from its various ethnic groups. The country is known for its traditions in music, literature, and visual arts. The Albanian language and the Serbian language are both official languages in Kosovo.
