Sex shop is a retailer that sells products related to adult sexual or erotic entertainment, such as vibrators, lingerie, pornography, and other related products.

History[edit]

The first sex shops were opened in the 1960s, the first being opened by Beate Uhse AG in Flensburg, Germany in 1962. These stores were not in the public view and often located in the back streets. However, the visibility of these stores have increased over time, particularly due to the relaxation of laws and societal attitudes towards sex.

Products[edit]

Sex shops typically sell a variety of products, including but not limited to:

  • Sex toys: These include devices like vibrators, dildos, and cock rings. They are designed to enhance sexual pleasure.
  • Lingerie: This category includes various types of sexy clothing and costumes.
  • Pornography: This can be in the form of DVDs, magazines, or online access codes.
  • Fetish wear: This includes clothing, accessories, and other items used in sexual fetishism.
  • Lubricants: These are used to facilitate sexual activity.
  • Condoms: These are used for safe sex practices.

Legal issues and controversy[edit]

Sex shops have been the subject of many legal issues and controversies. In some jurisdictions, sex shops are regulated by law, with access not legally permitted to minors, the age depending on local law. Some jurisdictions prohibit sex shops entirely.
