Region is a term that is used in various disciplines to denote areas that are broadly defined by physical characteristics, human impact characteristics, and the interaction of humanity and the environment. It is a concept that is used in geography, biology, and many other fields.
Geographical Regions[edit]
A geographical region is a spatial area that is characterized by a level of homogeneity in certain phenomena. Some regions are physically defined by landform features such as mountains, valleys, and bodies of water. Other regions are defined by the nature of the land use or economic activity that takes place there.
Biological Regions[edit]
In biology, a region can refer to an area of the body with a specific function, or a part of an organism that has a specific role in the overall function of the organism. For example, the abdominal region in humans is responsible for housing many of the body's vital organs.
Cultural Regions[edit]
A cultural region is an area that is characterized by a majority of residents who have certain cultural, social or economic traits. Cultural regions are often associated with an ethnic group and the cultural characteristics of that group.
Political Regions[edit]
A political region is a region that is governed by a specific political entity, such as a country, state, or city. Political regions have defined boundaries and are often established by governmental authorities.
