Illinois is a state located in the Midwestern region of the United States. It is the 6th most populous state and 25th largest state in terms of land area, and is often noted as a microcosm of the entire country.

History[edit]

The history of Illinois may be defined by several broad historical periods, namely, the pre-Columbian period, the era of European exploration and colonization, its development as part of the American frontier, and finally, its growth into one of the most populous and economically powerful states of the United States.

Geography[edit]

Illinois is located in the Midwest Region of the United States and is one of the eight states and Canadian province of Ontario in the bi-national Great Lakes region of North America.

Demographics[edit]

As of the 2010 census, Illinois has a population of 12,830,632. Its largest city and most important cultural and economic center is Chicago.

Economy[edit]

The economy of Illinois is the fifth largest by GDP in the United States and one of the most diversified economies in the world.

Education[edit]

Illinois is home to a variety of public and private institutions of higher education.

Healthcare[edit]

Illinois has a mixed health care system with private hospitals, public hospitals, and a variety of medical schools spread across the state.

Politics[edit]

The politics of Illinois are expressed in the state's constitution, its statutes, and its body of case law.
