Philippe's[edit]
Philippe's, also known as Philippe the Original, is a renowned restaurant located in Los Angeles, California. It is famous for its French dipped sandwiches and is considered a cultural icon in the city.
History[edit]
Philippe's was established in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu, a French immigrant. The restaurant is known for its unique style of sandwich, which was reportedly invented by accident when Mathieu dropped a sliced French roll into a roasting pan filled with juice. The customer, a policeman, liked the sandwich and came back the next day with friends to have the same. Thus, the French dipped sandwich was born.
Menu[edit]
The menu at Philippe's is simple yet satisfying. The star of the menu is the French dipped sandwich, which comes with a choice of roast beef, roast pork, leg of lamb, turkey, or ham. The sandwiches are served on a French roll that has been dipped in the juice of the selected meat. Other menu items include various sides, salads, and desserts.
Location[edit]
Philippe's is located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, near Union Station. The restaurant has been at its current location on Alameda Street since 1951, after being forced to move from its original location on Aliso Street due to the construction of the Hollywood Freeway.
Legacy[edit]
Philippe's has left a significant mark on Los Angeles' culinary scene. The restaurant has been featured in numerous media outlets and has been visited by many celebrities over the years. Despite its fame, Philippe's has remained a family-owned business, maintaining its commitment to quality food and service.
