Beat is a UK based charity that provides support and information for individuals affected by eating disorders and their families. Beat is the working name of the Eating Disorders Association, and the charity provides helplines for adults and young people, online support and a UK-wide network of self-help groups to help people beat their eating disorders.
History[edit]
Beat was founded in 1989 as the Eating Disorders Association, with the aim of providing a unique source of support, information and advice for people affected by eating disorders. The charity changed its name to Beat in 2007 to reflect its primary aim - beating eating disorders.
Services[edit]
Beat provides a range of services to support individuals affected by eating disorders and their families. These include:
- Helplines: Beat operates separate helplines for adults and young people. The helplines provide support and information about eating disorders and related issues.
- Online support: Beat provides online support including information resources, message boards and online support groups.
- Self-help groups: Beat supports a UK-wide network of self-help groups. These groups provide a safe and supportive environment where people affected by eating disorders can share experiences and coping strategies.
- Training and consultancy: Beat provides training and consultancy services to health professionals and others who work with people affected by eating disorders.
Fundraising[edit]
Beat relies on fundraising to support its work. The charity organises a range of fundraising events and activities, and encourages supporters to organise their own fundraising events.
