Zwack is a liqueur produced in Hungary. It is known for its unique taste and high alcohol content, typically around 40%. The drink is made from a secret recipe of more than 40 different herbs and spices. The exact recipe is a closely guarded secret, known only to the Zwack family.

History[edit]

Zwack was first produced in 1790 by József Zwack, the royal physician to Emperor Joseph II. The emperor was reportedly so pleased with the drink that he declared, "Dr. Zwack, das ist ein Unicum!" (Dr. Zwack, this is unique!). This led to the drink being known as Unicum.

During World War II, the Zwack family fled Hungary and the factory was destroyed. The family returned in 1988 and rebuilt the factory, resuming production of the original recipe.

Production[edit]

Zwack is made by macerating a mixture of herbs and spices in alcohol, then distilling the mixture. The resulting distillate is aged in oak casks for at least six months before being bottled.

Taste[edit]

Zwack has a complex taste, with a strong herbal flavor and a slightly bitter aftertaste. It is often served as a digestif, to aid digestion after a meal.
