Mortlach Distillery is a whisky distillery in Dufftown, Moray, Scotland. Founded in 1823, it is one of the oldest operational distilleries in Scotland. The distillery is owned by Diageo, a British multinational alcoholic beverages company.

History[edit]

The Mortlach Distillery was established in 1823 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPherson. It was the first distillery to be built at Dufftown, which is now one of the epicentres of Speyside whisky production. The distillery has changed hands several times over the years, with owners including John Walker & Sons and Distillers Company.

Production[edit]

The distillery has a unique distillation process, often referred to as 'The Way'. This involves distilling the spirit 2.81 times, a complex process that is unique to Mortlach and contributes to its rich, flavourful character. The whisky is matured in a combination of bourbon barrels, sherry casks, and refill casks, which gives it a distinctive, complex flavour profile.

Products[edit]

Mortlach produces a range of single malt whiskies, including the 12-year-old 'Wee Witchie', the 16-year-old 'Distiller's Dram', and the 20-year-old 'Cowie's Blue Seal'. Each expression has its own unique characteristics, but all share Mortlach's signature rich, robust flavour.

In popular culture[edit]

Mortlach whisky has been featured in various works of fiction, including the novels of Ian Rankin and Alexander McCall Smith. It is often portrayed as a favourite drink of discerning whisky connoisseurs.
