TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a media organization that posts talks online for free distribution under the slogan "ideas worth spreading." TED was founded in February 1984 as a conference, which has been held annually since 1990. TED's early emphasis was on technology and design, consistent with its Silicon Valley origins, but it has since broadened its focus to include talks on many scientific, cultural, and academic topics.

History[edit]

TED was conceived by architect and graphic designer Richard Saul Wurman, who observed a convergence of the fields of technology, entertainment, and design. The first conference, organized by Wurman and broadcast designer Harry Marks in 1984, featured a demonstration of the compact disc, the e-book, and cutting-edge 3D graphics from Lucasfilm, while mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot demonstrated how to map coastlines using his newly discovered fractals.

After a financial setback, the conference was revived in 1990 by media entrepreneur Chris Anderson, who acquired TED through his non-profit organization, the Sapling Foundation. Under Anderson's stewardship, TED has grown into a global platform for "ideas worth spreading."

TED Talks[edit]

TED Talks are influential videos from expert speakers on education, business, science, tech, and creativity, with subtitles in 100+ languages. TED began posting talks online in 2006, and they quickly attracted a global audience. As of 2023, TED Talks have been viewed over a billion times.

TED Conferences[edit]

TED conferences are held annually in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The main TED conference is held in the spring, and a TEDGlobal conference is held in the summer. TED also hosts a number of other events, including TEDWomen, TEDYouth, and TEDSummit.

TEDx[edit]

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.

TED Fellows[edit]

The TED Fellows program brings together young innovators from around the world who have shown unusual accomplishment and courage. The program provides them with transformational support to help them realize their full potential.

TED-Ed[edit]

TED-Ed is TED's youth and education initiative. It aims to spark and celebrate the ideas of teachers and students around the world. TED-Ed's mission is to capture and amplify the voices of great educators and students by creating interactive lessons worth sharing.
