Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) is a nonprofit organization that aims to empower autistic individuals and advocate for their rights and opportunities. Founded in 2006 by Ari Ne'eman and Scott Michael Robertson, ASAN operates on the principle of "Nothing About Us Without Us," emphasizing that autistic people should be central in the conversations and decisions that affect their lives. The organization is run by and for autistic people.
History[edit]
The Autistic Self Advocacy Network was established to provide a platform for autistic individuals to advocate for themselves and to promote the neurodiversity movement, which posits that neurological differences should be recognized and respected as a social category similar to ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and disability. Since its inception, ASAN has been involved in various advocacy efforts, including policy advocacy, public awareness campaigns, and providing resources for autistic individuals.
Mission and Vision[edit]
ASAN's mission is to advance the principles of the disability rights movement with regard to autism. They work to increase the representation of autistic people across all spheres of society, improve public understanding of autism, and to fight against the stigmatization and discrimination that autistic people often face. Their vision includes a world in which autistic individuals can enjoy the same access, rights, and opportunities as all other citizens.
Activities and Programs[edit]
ASAN engages in a wide range of activities aimed at promoting its mission:
- Policy Advocacy: ASAN advocates for policies and legislation that support the rights and interests of autistic individuals. This includes efforts to improve healthcare access, education, and employment opportunities for autistic people.
- Public Awareness: The organization works to educate the public about autism and the neurodiversity movement through campaigns, publications, and social media.
- Community Engagement: ASAN provides resources and support for autistic individuals and their families. They also organize events and conferences to foster community among autistic people.
- Research and Reports: ASAN conducts and supports research on issues affecting the autistic community. They publish reports and guides to inform policy-making and public discourse.
Controversies and Criticism[edit]
Like many advocacy organizations, ASAN has faced criticism and controversy, particularly from those who disagree with its stance on neurodiversity and its opposition to certain autism treatments and interventions that ASAN views as unethical or harmful.
Impact[edit]
ASAN has had a significant impact on the discourse surrounding autism and disability rights. Its advocacy has contributed to changes in policy and increased awareness and acceptance of autistic individuals. The organization's emphasis on self-advocacy and empowerment has also inspired similar movements and organizations worldwide.
