Suriname, officially known as the Republic of Suriname, is a country located on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America. It is bordered by French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west, Brazil to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the north.
History[edit]
Suriname was originally inhabited by various indigenous tribes before being explored and contested by European powers from the 16th century. It was eventually colonized by the Netherlands in the 17th century.
Geography[edit]
Suriname is the smallest country in South America, but it is rich in natural resources. The country is covered by tropical rainforest, with the Amazon Rainforest extending into its territory. The Brokopondo Reservoir, one of the largest reservoirs in the world, is located in Suriname.
Politics[edit]
Suriname is a constitutional democratic republic. The President is both the head of state and head of government. The National Assembly is the legislative branch of the government.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Suriname is dominated by the mining industry, with exports of alumina, gold, and oil accounting for about 85% of exports and 25% of government revenues. Other important economic sectors include agriculture, forestry, and fishing.
Culture[edit]
Suriname's culture is a blend of indigenous, African, Indian, and European traditions. The official language is Dutch, but a number of other languages are also spoken.
Demographics[edit]
Suriname is ethnically diverse, with large groups of Afro-Surinamese, Indo-Surinamese, Javanese, Maroons, and Chinese.
