Pepsi Invaders[edit]
Pepsi Invaders is a variant of the popular arcade game, Space Invaders, developed by Atari, Inc. for the Atari 2600 video game console. It was commissioned by Coca-Cola company as a novelty item to be given away at a 1983 sales convention.
Gameplay[edit]
The gameplay of Pepsi Invaders is similar to that of Space Invaders. The player controls a laser cannon that moves horizontally along the bottom of the screen. The objective is to shoot at the descending rows of Pepsi logos before they reach the bottom of the screen. Unlike Space Invaders, there is no game over in Pepsi Invaders. Instead, the game has a time limit of three minutes.
Development and Release[edit]
Pepsi Invaders was developed by Atari, Inc. at the request of Coca-Cola. The game was not sold commercially and was only given away to attendees of the 1983 Coca-Cola sales convention. Because of its limited release, original cartridges of Pepsi Invaders are considered rare and valuable by video game collectors.
Reception[edit]
Due to its limited release, Pepsi Invaders did not receive much attention from the gaming press at the time of its release. However, it has since gained a cult following among video game collectors and enthusiasts for its unique backstory and rarity.
Legacy[edit]
Pepsi Invaders is often cited as one of the earliest examples of advergaming, a type of marketing strategy where a game is used to promote a product or brand. It has also been featured in several books and articles about the history of video games.
