Customs is a term that refers to the official department that administers and collects the duties levied by a government on imported goods. It is also the procedures involved in such collection. This includes the government policy regarding tariffs and restrictions and other measures to restrict trade, particularly in the importation of goods.

Definition[edit]

Customs is an authority or agency in a country responsible for collecting tariffs and for controlling the flow of goods, including animals, transports, personal, and hazardous items, into and out of a country.<ref>https://www.wikimd.com/wiki/Customs</ref>

Role and Function[edit]

The primary role of customs is to prevent illegal and/or dangerous goods from entering or exiting the country. This includes a wide range of potential threats such as drugs, weapons, and a variety of other illegal and dangerous goods. In many jurisdictions, customs is also responsible for enforcing intellectual property rights, such as copyright and trademark infringement.

Customs Duties[edit]

Customs duties are a form of indirect tax and are generally charged on items that are imported into a jurisdiction. The amount of duty charged will depend on the nature of the goods, their value, and the country of origin.

Customs and Trade[edit]

Customs has a significant role in promoting international trade. It does this by enforcing trade agreements, collecting import and export data, protecting domestic industries and consumers, and ensuring the integrity of the trade system.
