Melina Kibbe

Melina Kibbe is an American surgeon and medical researcher known for her significant contributions to the field of vascular surgery. She is currently the Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Early Life and Education

Melina Kibbe was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago, where she developed an interest in biology and medicine. She then pursued her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Career

After completing her medical degree, Kibbe completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She then completed a fellowship in vascular surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

In 2016, Kibbe was appointed as the Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. She is the first woman to hold this position. In addition to her administrative role, she also conducts research in the field of vascular surgery.

Research

Kibbe's research focuses on the development of novel therapies for patients with vascular disease. She is particularly interested in the role of nitric oxide in vascular health and disease. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and she has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals.

Awards and Recognition

Kibbe has received numerous awards and recognition for her work in the field of vascular surgery. She is a member of the American Surgical Association and the Society for Vascular Surgery. In 2017, she was awarded the Society for Vascular Surgery's Lifetime Achievement Award.
