Syria (officially known as the Syrian Arab Republic) is a country located in Western Asia, bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel and Lebanon to the southwest.
History[edit]
Syria has a rich history dating back to ancient times. It was home to several ancient civilizations, including the Akkadians, Amorites, Assyrians, Babylonians, and Persians. In more recent history, Syria was a French mandate following World War I and gained independence in 1946.
Geography[edit]
Syria's geography is diverse, with coastal plains in the west, mountain ranges in the west and southwest, and desert regions in the east. The country's highest point is Mount Hermon.
Politics[edit]
Syria is a unitary republic under a authoritarian regime. The President of Syria is the head of state and the Prime Minister of Syria is the head of government. The country's political system has been in a state of flux due to the ongoing Syrian Civil War.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Syria is primarily based on agriculture, industry, and services. However, the ongoing civil war has significantly impacted the economy, leading to a decline in GDP and an increase in unemployment.
Culture[edit]
Syrian culture is rich and diverse, with influences from the many civilizations that have inhabited the region. It includes literature, music, dance, and cuisine, among other aspects.
