Betaherpesvirinae is a subfamily of the Herpesviridae family. This subfamily is known to cause a variety of diseases in humans, including cytomegalovirus infections, roseola, and Kaposi's sarcoma.
Overview[edit]
The Betaherpesvirinae subfamily is one of three subfamilies in the Herpesviridae family. The other two subfamilies are Alphaherpesvirinae and Gammaherpesvirinae. The viruses in the Betaherpesvirinae subfamily are known to cause a variety of diseases in humans.
Diseases[edit]
The viruses in the Betaherpesvirinae subfamily can cause a variety of diseases in humans. These include:
- Cytomegalovirus infections: These are often asymptomatic in healthy individuals, but can cause serious illness in people with weakened immune systems or in newborns infected in utero.
- Roseola: This is a common childhood illness characterized by a high fever followed by a rash.
- Kaposi's sarcoma: This is a type of cancer that can occur in people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS.
Viruses[edit]
The Betaherpesvirinae subfamily includes several viruses, including:
- Human herpesvirus 5 (HHV-5), also known as cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), which causes roseola
- Human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7), which also causes roseola
- Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also known as Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV)
