Dominican Republic is a country located in the Caribbean region. It is the second largest nation in the Antilles by area and population. The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with the nation of Haiti. The country is known for its diverse geography, which includes rainforests, savannahs, highlands, and deserts. The capital city is Santo Domingo.
History[edit]
The Dominican Republic was inhabited by the Taíno people prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. The country gained independence from Spain in 1821, but was then occupied by Haiti for 22 years. The Dominican Republic regained its independence in 1844.
