BeaverTails is a Canadian-based chain of pastry stands operated by BeaverTails Canada Inc. The chain's namesake product is a line of fried dough pastries, individually hand stretched to resemble a beaver's tail. The chain originated in Killaloe, Ontario in 1978 and opened its first permanent store in Ottawa two years later. It now has franchises and licenses in four countries: Canada (the home country), the United States, South Korea, and Japan.

History[edit]

The first BeaverTails pastry stand was opened in 1978 by Grant and Pam Hooker at the Killaloe Craft and Community Fair. In 1980, they opened their first permanent store in Ottawa's ByWard Market. The company began franchising in 1987, and in 2002, Pino Di Ioia and his partners, Anthony Di Ioia and Tina Serrao, along with Grant Hooker, bought the company.

Products[edit]

The BeaverTails pastry, also known as Queues de Castor in French, is a Canadian dessert icon. The dough is stretched by hand to the shape of a beaver's tail, hence the name. It is then float cooked in canola oil and served hot with a variety of toppings. The most popular topping is the classic cinnamon and sugar, but other options include apple cinnamon, chocolate hazelnut spread, and maple butter.

As of 2020, there are over 140 BeaverTails locations worldwide. The company has franchises in Canada, the United States, South Korea, and Japan. The company also operates mobile food stands at events and venues.
