November is the eleventh month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, the fourth and last of four months to have a length of 30 days and the fifth and last of five months to have a length of fewer than 31 days. November was the ninth month of the calendar of Romulus c. 750 BC. November retained its name (from the Latin novem meaning "nine") when January and February were added to the Roman calendar.
History[edit]
November was originally the ninth month in the ancient Roman calendar, which started in March. It became the eleventh month in the calendar of Numa in 700 BC, which had January and February as the first two months. In the Northern Hemisphere, November is the equivalent to May in the Southern Hemisphere.
Events in November[edit]
November is known for many national and international events. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Remembrance Day is celebrated in Commonwealth countries on November 11. All Saints' Day is celebrated in many countries on November 1.
November in culture[edit]
In many cultures, November is a time of harvest and preparation for the winter months. The month is often associated with the colors of fall and the end of the growing season. In literature and film, November often symbolizes a time of change and transition.
Birthstone and Flower[edit]
The birthstone for November is the topaz which symbolizes friendship and the flower is the chrysanthemum.
