Westvleteren Brewery[edit]

The Westvleteren Brewery (Dutch: Brouwerij Westvleteren) is a Belgian Trappist brewery, located within the walls of the Trappist Abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren in the municipality of Vleteren, West Flanders, Belgium.

History[edit]

The Westvleteren Brewery was established on June 26, 1838, making it one of the oldest Trappist breweries in the world. The brewery was founded by Trappist monks, who had a tradition of brewing beer to finance the monastery and their charitable endeavors.

Beers[edit]

The brewery produces three beers: Westvleteren Blonde, Westvleteren 8 and Westvleteren 12. The Westvleteren 12, a quadrupel, is often considered one of the best beers in the world.

Westvleteren Blonde[edit]

The Westvleteren Blonde is a 5.8% ABV beer, the lightest beer brewed at the Westvleteren Brewery.

Westvleteren 8[edit]

The Westvleteren 8 is a 8% ABV beer, a Dubbel, which is a strong, rich and malty beer.

Westvleteren 12[edit]

The Westvleteren 12 is a 10.2% ABV beer, a quadrupel, which is a strong beer with powerful malt flavors, complex fruit and spice notes, and a touch of bitterness.

Sales and Distribution[edit]

The beers from Westvleteren Brewery are sold directly from the monastery and are not widely distributed. The monks have a policy of "selling the beer to live, not living to sell the beer."
