Speech–language pathology is a field of expertise practiced by a clinician known as a speech–language pathologist (SLP), also sometimes referred to as a speech therapist. Speech–language pathology is concerned with the assessment and treatment of speech disorders and language disorders, communication disorders, voice disorders, and swallowing disorders in children and adults. This profession is deeply involved with the diagnosis, prevention, and therapeutic services for individuals who are unable to communicate effectively or who have difficulties with feeding and swallowing.

Scope of Practice

The scope of practice for a speech–language pathologist includes the evaluation and treatment of:

• Articulation disorders: difficulties producing sounds in syllables or saying words incorrectly to the point that listeners can't understand what's being said.
• Fluency disorders: problems such as stuttering, in which the flow of speech is interrupted by abnormal stoppages, repetitions (st-st-stuttering), or prolonging sounds and syllables (ssssstuttering).
• Resonance or voice disorders: problems with the pitch, volume, or quality of the voice that distract listeners from what's being said. These types of disorders may also cause pain or discomfort for a child when speaking.
• Language disorders: difficulties understanding and/or using words in context, both verbally and nonverbally.
• Cognitive-communication disorders: problems with communication skills that involve memory, attention, perception, organization, regulation, and problem solving.
• Swallowing disorders (dysphagia): difficulties in the spectrum of the swallowing process, from chewing food to moving it into the stomach.

Education and Training

To become a speech–language pathologist, an individual must obtain a master's degree in speech–language pathology from an accredited institution. The curriculum includes coursework in anatomy and physiology, the nature of disorders, principles of acoustics, psychological aspects of communication, and clinical practices. In addition to academic coursework, a supervised clinical internship is required to gain hands-on experience. After completing their education, candidates must pass a national examination to earn certification and licensure in the field.

Speech–language pathologists work in a variety of settings, including:

• Hospitals and rehabilitation centers
• Educational settings such as schools and universities
• Private practices
