Etymology

The name "Xiamen" comes from the Hokkien pronunciation of the characters "厦门", which mean "Mansion Gate". The university's name reflects its location in the city of Xiamen.

History

Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, a prominent businessman and philanthropist in overseas Chinese communities. It was the first university in China founded by an overseas Chinese individual.

Xiamen University offers 76 undergraduate programs, 187 master programs, and 156 doctoral programs. It is known for its strong faculty and research in economics, management, fine arts, law, chemistry, journalism, communication, and mathematics.
