Visayas

Visayas (pronounced vi-SAY-as) is a group of islands in the central part of the Philippines. The term "Visayas" comes from the name of the 7th-century thalassocratic empire, the Kedatuan of Madja-as, which was centered in the islands.

Etymology

The name "Visayas" is derived from the name of the Kedatuan of Madja-as, a historical polity that existed in the region during the 7th century. The term "Madja-as" is believed to mean "high up" or "place of the high ones" in the local language.
