The University of Bologna (Università di Bologna, pronounced: [uniˈversita di boˈloɲɲa]) is a research university located in Bologna, Italy. It is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the world, founded in 1088.

The name "Bologna" is derived from the Etruscan city of Felsina, which was later renamed Bononia by the Romans. The term "university" comes from the Latin universitas, meaning "a whole".

History
