Trimethoprim/Polymyxin

Trimethoprim/Polymyxin (pronunciation: try-METH-oh-prim/poly-MIX-in) is a combination of two antibiotics used to treat bacterial eye infections.

Etymology

The term Trimethoprim is derived from its chemical structure, 2,4-diamino-5-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl)pyrimidine. Polymyxin is named after the Greek words 'poly' meaning 'many' and 'mykes' meaning 'fungus', as it was originally discovered in a strain of the bacterium Bacillus polymyxa.

Usage

Trimethoprim/Polymyxin is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, including conjunctivitis and blepharitis. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria, helping to eliminate the infection.
