Etymology
The term "orange" is derived from the Sanskrit word for the fruit, "naranga". The word "sweet" is used to differentiate this species from the bitter orange (Citrus aurantium).
Description
The sweet orange tree is an evergreen, flowering tree, with an average height of 9 to 10 m (30 to 33 ft), although some very old specimens can reach 15 m (49 ft). Its oval leaves, alternately arranged, are 4 to 10 cm (1.6 to 3.9 in) long and have crenulate margins. The sweet orange has a number of cultivars, including the common orange, the navel orange, and the blood orange.
Cultivation
Sweet orange trees are widely grown in tropical and subtropical climates for their sweet fruit, which can be eaten fresh or processed to obtain juices. The tree is propagated by grafting, including a bud from a mature tree onto a suitable rootstock.
