Sustainability

Sustainability (pronunciation: /səˌsteɪnəˈbɪlɪti/) is a broad discipline that studies the ability of systems to endure and remain diverse and productive over time. The term is derived from the Latin sustinere (tenere, to hold; sus, up).

Sustainability can be classified into three main types: environmental, economic, and social, which are interlinked and crucial for the well-being of individuals and societies.

Environmental Sustainability

Environmental Sustainability (pronunciation: /ɪnˌvaɪrənˈmɛntəl səˌsteɪnəˈbɪlɪti/) refers to the responsible interaction with the environment to avoid depletion or degradation of natural resources and allow for long-term environmental quality. It involves the preservation of the natural environment and the exhaustion of natural resources.

Economic Sustainability

Economic Sustainability (pronunciation: /iːkəˈnɒmɪk səˌsteɪnəˈbɪlɪti/) involves the use of various strategies for employing existing resources optimally so that a responsible and beneficial balance can be achieved over the longer term. It includes aspects like fiscal sustainability, which refers to a government's ability to sustain its current spending, tax and other policies in the long run without threatening government solvency or defaulting on some of its liabilities or promised expenditures.

Social Sustainability

Social Sustainability (pronunciation: /ˈsoʊʃəl səˌsteɪnəˈbɪlɪti/) is the ability of a social system, such as a country, to function at a defined level of social well being indefinitely. It includes aspects like human rights, labor rights, and corporate governance.
