Stepsibling

Stepsibling (pronounced: step-sib-ling) is a term used to describe the offspring of one's Stepparent who is not one's biological or adoptive sibling.

Etymology

The term "stepsibling" is derived from the Old English word "steop-", which means bereaved, and "sibling", which refers to a brother or sister. The prefix "step-" is used in the sense of "related by marriage" (rather than by blood).

Definition

A stepsibling is a sibling who is related to you through marriage, not through blood. This relationship occurs when one of your biological parents marries someone who already has children. The children of the person your parent marries are your stepsiblings.
