The Sonoran Desert (pronunciation: /soʊˈrɔːrən/) is a North American desert which covers large parts of the Southwestern United States in Arizona and California, and of Northwestern Mexico in Sonora, Baja California, and Baja California Sur. It is the hottest desert in Mexico.
Etymology
The desert is named for the Sonora state in Mexico. The word "Sonora" is derived from the Spanish word "sonoro", meaning resonant or sonorous, possibly in reference to the region's acoustic properties.
Geography
The Sonoran Desert covers an area of 100,000 square miles. It is noted for its subtropical desert climate, with two rainy seasons per year and high biodiversity. The desert is home to unique flora and fauna, including the Saguaro cactus and the Sonoran Desert Toad.
