Desert (pronounced /ˈdɛzərt/) is a term used in the medical field to describe a region or area that lacks certain resources or services, particularly in relation to healthcare. The term is most commonly used in the context of a "healthcare desert", which refers to a geographic area where access to healthcare is limited or non-existent.

Etymology

The term "desert" originates from the Old French desert, from Late Latin desertum (source also of Italian deserto, Spanish desierto), literally "thing abandoned" (used in Vulgate to translate "wilderness"), noun use of neuter past participle of deserere "forsake".
