Soft Drinks

Soft drinks (/'sɒft 'drɪŋks/), also known as soda (/'soʊdə/), pop (/'pɒp/), or carbonated beverages (/'kɑːrbəneɪtɪd 'bɛvərɪdʒɪz/), are non-alcoholic beverages that are typically carbonated. The term "soft drink" is derived from "hard drinks" which refer to alcoholic beverages.

History

The first marketed soft drinks appeared in the 17th century as a mixture of water with lemon juice sweetened with honey. The compounding of carbonated water was first made in the 18th century. The term "soda water" was coined in 1798.

Ingredients

Soft drinks typically contain water, a sweetener, and a flavoring agent. The sweetener may be sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, or a sugar substitute in the case of diet drinks. Some soft drinks may also contain caffeine or added vitamins and minerals.

Health Effects

Consumption of soft drinks has been linked to a variety of health issues, including obesity, dental cavities, and osteoporosis. Many soft drinks also contain high levels of sugar, which can contribute to weight gain and other health problems.
